Prince George Naturalist Club Trip Leader Primer
Saturday April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Location: 2453 Sadler Drive (off Ridgeview in the Hart area)
Plan to arrive around 9:50 a.m., if possible, so that we can get the coffee on and start on time
This event is for everyone: trip leaders, aspiring leaders, and interested club members. The morning session will cover trip schedules, waivers, insurance and trip planning. After lunch, guest presenters Lauren Phillips and Dean Price from OVERhang Education Center will cover group management and wilderness emergency management and evacuation, with part of this section outside during a short nature walk.
BRING a lunch and the usual pack, clothing and gear that you would bring for a PGNC field trip at this time of the year.
10:00-10:30: Trip Schedule Discussion (Clive Keen): introduce club members – who is doing what this year; review of coming field trips- scheduled and likely; typical footwear, clothing, food, water, and equipment requirements; group discussion
10:30-11:00: BC Nature waiver/insurance (Clive Keen)
Why we need it; who is responsible, and what does “responsible” mean; who is covered; how to manage the waivers and sign-in sheets; group discussion
11:00-12:00: Trip Planning and Preparation (Mike Nash, Lauren Phillips)
Planning process; trip planning tools; navigation strategies, use of maps, compass and GPS; at the meeting place; use of assistants/sweep; at the trailhead; on the trail; group dynamics and management; after the trip
12:00-12:45: Lunch and group discussion
12:45-14:30: Nature hike with simulated problem (Lauren Phillips, Dean Price)
