Update on two Naturalist Club events:
1. Christmas Bird Count (CBC)
Cathy Antoniazzi , PG CBC compiler, has confirmed that the count is rescheduled for Sunday, 29 December. For those that have not previously taken part, note that this requires commitment for the full hours of daylight, but it is not strenuous, as counting is largely conducted by travelling from spot to spot by car. Cathy will be in touch with people that have expressed interest.
2. Swan and Eagle Count
The provincial compiler has set Sunday, January 12, 2014 as the day for the Swan (and Eagle) count. Sandra Kinsey is the local coordinator. To take part, meet at 9:00 am under the large Spruceland shopping centre sign. Bring lunch, plus snowshoes or skis, and dress warmly.
In case you’re wondering why the two counts aren’t combined: the CBC counts birds within a 24-km diameter circle around the city. The swan count, though, covers birds concentrated by the unfrozen lakes and rivers within driving distance – Crooked River etc – which are mostly well outside the CBC area.
