Dr. Richard Hebda, Royal Ontario Museum, Thursday, March 1

The Aliens are coming. The world’s climates are changing. People are disturbing and converting ecosystems worldwide. The conditions are perfect for plant and animal species to spread to new regions and degrade biodiversity, damage agricultural production and become serious nuisances.

Join Richard Hebda of the Royal British Columbia Museum as he explores the characteristics of invasive plant species, how to know them and how to prevent their invasions or control them. In his illustrated talk Richard will discuss how to avoid, eliminate and control some invasive species. He will emphasize the need to reduce disturbance of the landscape and use of native species as strategies in the fight against the aliens.

Some more information on Dr. Hebda:

Dr. Richard Hebda is the Curator of Botany and Earth History at the Royal BC Museum.  Richard is interested in botany in general but in particular the use of fossil plant remains to instruct us about broad themes such as biogeography, evolution, and history of the landscape and climate. Areas of research expertise include pollen analysis and paleobotany, classification and biology of grasses, plant ecology, ethnobotany, use of native plants in gardening and ecological restoration, as well as stratigraphy and paleoecology. The field of climate change, and its impacts on ecosystems is a recent focus. Research is carried out with the help of graduate and undergraduate students from the University of Victoria where Richard has faculty appointments in the Department of Biology, and the Schools of Earth and Ocean Sciences and the University of Victoria.
